SALEM — Students from preschool through fifth grade and their families can take a walk on the wild side, play a straw flute, float a penny boat, fidget or just relax during a free STEAM event from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kent State Salem.

The annual hands-on day of activities known as Kids STEAM University incorporates science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM) into projects to engage the students. Plus they can get a free lunch and receive take-home STEAM activities.

“There’s a lot of fun, different games,” Columbiana County Educational Service Center Assistant Superintendent Marie Williams said.

She explained that STEAM activities make learning relevant for the students, connecting the principles of science, technology, engineering, art and math to everyday life.

Students ask why they need to know some of the lessons they receive in school. Williams said STEAM activities show them how it all connects.

The day is a joint venture of the CCESC and Kent State University Salem Campus, held at the campus at 2491 state Route 45. This is the fifth year for the event, which is back to normal after COVID.

Event sponsors include Williams and Case Insurance, Fairway Independent Mortgage, Columbiana County Port Authority, Heritage Thermal, SilverApple/TelPi, Salem City Health District and City Machine Technologies (CMT).

Lunch will be provided by Salem Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe and the Middleton ACE Hardware.

Williams said at least 25 exhibitors are taking part by creating an activity or activities aimed at engaging the students, with some inside the building and some outside.

Williams said the event is designed to work around family schedules so they can come and go when they want. There’s no cost either. Information about the event was set to area school districts to share with their students and their families.

In 2021, the total number of students registered was 125, with 23 local exhibitors and 19 sponsors, with students representative of all grade levels and all area schools.
