Multi-disciplinary projects organisation Lesedi Nuclear Services is active at clients in the mining sector and has, over the last six years, executed several projects for mining industry clients focusing on support systems in mining processes.

These include, among others, a focus on environmental pollution control and off gas cleaning solutions, but also on various bespoke engineered project solutions covering compressed air installations, including air dryers, combined heat and power (CHP) plants as well as dewatering plants.

The company’s portfolio is not limited to just products, says GM Bernhard Wilcocks, who notes that the company’s focus rather comprises services, as it “assists clients to find and implement solutions to multidisciplinary engineering problems”.

Product solutions, which are offered to clients in partnership with technology partners, include, inter alia, the removal of particulates in off gas streams and process streams utilising electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and fabric filter technologies, as well as the upgrade refurbishment of existing electrostatic precipitators (ESP), the conversion of ESP to pulse jet fabric filter (PJFF) plants, as well as the removal of SOx and NOx from gas streams using various technologies, depending on the process conditions and application, ranging from lime scrubbing (wet & dry) to acid plants (strong and weak acid).

Wilcocks adds that “Lesedi has access to state-of-the-art gas drying products and has successfully executed numerous compressed air installation projects”, alongside the development of CHP plant solutions, thereby offering clients process efficiency improvements and carbon and power reduction benefits.

However, considering that Lesedi is solution focussed, Wilcocks reiterates that the company supports its clients with the best technology selections for their operational challenges.

“Using our strong engineering background and skill set, we make sure that we offer our clients the most efficient and cost-effective solution. Lesedi is technology agnostic, and we have access to a broad range of local and international technology partners over a wide range of products, putting us in an ideal position to engineer the best solutions for our clients,” he elaborates.

He adds that Lesedi also boasts three benefits not many other industry members can compete with, namely access to technology, experience in the application of said technology and a “full complement of in-house technical expertise to evaluate best solutions for clients”.

Using this expertise and experience, Lesedi’s team has serviced mining clients across the whole of South Africa, executing projects in eight of the nine provinces. The team has also successfully executed projects in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Mali.

“Our technology partners are internationally based in Europe, the United States and China. We base our product solutions and product offering leveraging on global project references and a diverse team of experienced partners.”

Lesedi has worked through the Covid-19 pandemic, and continued servicing its clients as an essential service provider during the hard lock down conditions.

“Our projects and the associated site construction activities cannot be conducted virtually, and our project teams and constructions crews continued their work in a responsible manner,” Wilcocks said, adding that the “new normal” for Lesedi is to “continue this responsible approach ensuring the health of our teams and crews are never compromised, improving our service offering from the experience gained during the pandemic”.

Looking ahead, Lesedi’s strategy will be to broaden its environmental product offering to a wider client base.

“Our CHP offering and a broader decarbonisation assistance programme through various initiatives are focus areas in the short to medium term, acknowledging the importance of environmental sustainability and responsible business culture,” Wilcocks concludes.
