Fall temperatures continue through the week.

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) -- The surface map this afternoon shows a 1028 mb high centered over southern West Virginia. A weak cool front was making its way through the Northeast while a stationary front was stretched across southern Florida, northeastward off the Southeast coast. Meanwhile, a weak upper-level shortwave trough axis was swinging off the eastern seaboard. A weak surface low reflection was evident off the Southeast coast, along the stationary boundary, with some clouds across North and South Carolina today, even some showers over South Carolina. Any clouds around this evening should give way to clearing skies tonight as the trough axis exits to the east and surface riding builds in from the north. With low dewpoints and light winds it will be a chilly night with most locations dipping into the 40s.

Surface ridging will be in firm control tomorrow. In addition, heights will be on the rise as upper-level ridging builds aloft across the eastern seaboard. This will promote a beautiful day with temperatures a couple of degrees warmer than today. A few high clouds can mix in with the sun at times, but overall very pleasant for mid-October.

As surface ridging shifts offshore later tomorrow into tomorrow night more of a southerly flow will develop, pumping northward increasing amounts of moisture. This along with some shortwave energy nearing from the southwest in the flow aloft will lead to an increase in clouds.

By Wednesday a strong, pronounced upper-level trough will be digging southward across the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region. Shortwave energy ejecting well out ahead of this trough will move across the area Wednesday which may result in showers lurking by just to the west and south of the Triangle. However, we are still keeping the Triangle and points north and east dry as it will take some time for the atmosphere to moisten up.

Heights will be lowering Wednesday night into Thursday as the large trough continues to dig southeastward into the East. With the falling heights, cold front nearing from the northwest and increasing moisture rounds of rain and thunderstorms are expected to expand across the area Wednesday night into Thursday. Some of the storms could be strong, with heavy downpours and gusty winds. Behind the front surface ridging builds in to round out the week and head into the weekend with a return to cooler and pleasant weather.
