BANGOR — A new report shows the number of traffic fatalities in Maine so far this year is much higher than last.

“We’re pretty concerned that we have exceeded fatality numbers so far here in March from where we were at the same time last year,” said Lauren Stewart, director of the Bureau of Highway Safety for Maine’s Department of Public Safety.

Statistics from the Department of Public Safety show that 32 people have died in car crashes on Maine roads so far this year.

“I think historically what we’ve seen is generally there’s a driving behavior that’s a primary or secondary causation factor for these crashes,” said Lt. Michael Johnston of the Maine State Police.

Although a full analysis of causes for fatal crashes this year has not been completed yet, Johnston said speed and unsafe driving typically end up being common factors.

“We like to emphasize those things continually to make sure that people are driving safe, that they’re driving the speed limit, they’re wearing their seat belt. They’re not driving while fatigued. They’re certainly not driving while impaired. They’re not driving while distracted,” Stewart said.

Johnston said one of the best ways to prevent a traffic fatality is to always wear your seat belt.

“You get in a crash and you’re not wearing your seat belt, and that can turn what would otherwise be maybe a minor crash or minor personal injury crash into a fatal when you’re ejected or thrown around the vehicle,” Johnston said.

Stewart said it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and other cars on the road as well.

“Part of being a good driver is being a defensive driver,” Stewart said.

As warmer weather approaches, they said more people and cars will be on the roads making it crucial for drivers to be attentive.

“Slow down and enjoy their spring and summer and their families and friends, and live another day to get together with those people that you care about,” Stewart said.
