Jennifer Lawrence Felt Like She Lost Control of Her Career During Her Peak Fame Era

Remember back in 2012 and 2013 when Jennifer Lawrence was a literally inescapable presence on the internet/in pop culture in general and seemed to be just on top of the damn world? Well, behind the scenes, it didn't feel that way to her.

In case you need a quick recap of Jennifer Lawrence's peak fame era, here you go: The Hunger Games came out in 2012, rocketing Jennifer to A-List levels of fame, complete with her own catchy abbreviated nickname (J.Law, #neverforget) and an epic media blitz full of GIF-able moments and relatable quotes and anecdotes. The same year, she starred in Silver Linings Playbook and in 2013, at just 22-years-old, she nabbed her first Oscar for her performance in the film, proving she was both a box office success and a serious/seriously talented actor.

At this point, we hit the "everyone assumed Jennifer was on top of the damn world" moment in her career—but, during a “Screen Talk” discussion at the London Film Festival this weekend, she opened up about how she *actually* felt at that time.

"Between The Hunger Games coming out and winning the Oscar, I became such a commodity that I felt like every decision was a big, big group decision," she explained, per Variety. “When I reflect now, I can’t think of those following years, [because there was] just a loss of control."

After the high of the first Hunger Games film and her Oscar win, Jennifer continued to star in a steady string of major movies, including three Hunger Games sequels, four X-Men franchise movies, and a handful of other prestigious, Oscar-nominated films, like American Hustle and Joy. The release of said movies each came with more media blitzing, more GIFs, more interviews, more relatable banter, and, eventually, Jennifer hit overexposed/overworked status and decided to take a break from acting for a few years.

Since that peak famous person era, Jennifer has been living her best life—she fell in love, got married, and, earlier this year, she and her husband, Cooke Maroney welcomed their first child, a son. Taking that step back from work helped Jennifer reclaim her sense of identity.

"It feels personal for me the first time in a long time," she said of the work she's doing now, which includes taking on personal roles, like in her upcoming movie, Causeway, and getting into producing.
